The Art of Styling Your Bed with Cushions, Throws & Bed Runners
In Thailand
Adding decorative cushions, throws, and bed runners to your bed can completely change the mood of your room. For some people, it’s a must-have—like the finishing touch on a great outfit. For others (especially some men!), it might feel a little too much. But whether you love layering up or prefer to keep things simple, bed styling is a fun way to show off your personality and make your bedroom feel more like you.
What’s Inside:
Why add decorative cushions and bed runners?
One big reason hotels use bed runners and decorative pillows is practical. They help keep the white bedding clean when guests sit or place bags on the bed. But at home, the main reason is all about style and comfort.
Cushions, runners, and throws are like fashion accessories for your bedroom. They let you express your style—whether that’s soft and romantic, modern and bold, or relaxed and cozy. In Thailand, where we live with warm weather year-round, bed styling tends to be lighter and more minimal than what you see in cooler countries like the UK or US. But that doesn’t mean less style!
In this guide, we’ll share simple tips (with help from our Thai design team and international friends) to help you style your bed beautifully—no matter what your vibe is.
Step 1: Choose Your Design Style
Start by deciding what kind of look you want. Here are a few favorites we see in Thai homes, with inspiration from around the world:
- Simple Hotel Style – Crisp white sheets, a pair of bold or patterned cushions, and a simple bed runner. Clean, classic, and always stylish.
- Luxury Hotel Style – Think 4–5 cushions, layered textures, and a large throw blanket. This look feels rich and pampering—like your bed belongs in a five-star suite.
- Modern Nature Style – Bring the outdoors in with natural colors and tones. Soft greens, warm browns, mixed with delicate nature inspired patterns and even a little wildlife will create a relaxed but inspiring space.
- Chic Glam Style – Love a bit of sparkle and Luxury? Try plush fabrics like velvet, satin, or faux fur in jewel tones or metallics. This style is elegant and romantic.
- Holiday Style – astel colors, breezy fabrics, and easygoing patterns make you feel like you’re waking up on vacation—every day.
- Country Cottage Style – Cozy, soft, and welcoming. Mix small intricate patterns, simple checks, and soft layers with tactile textures. Great for creating a relaxed and homely feeling.
Step 2: Arranging Cushions on Your Bed
How many cushions is too many? That depends on your bed size and your style. For now, let’s use a king-size bed with 4 sleeping pillows as our example. You can easily adjust these ideas to fit your bed.

1. Cushion Pair
One decorative cushion per sleeping pillow, classic and tidy. For something a bit different, try bolsters instead of standard square cushions.

2. Layered Five
This luxe look uses five cushions in two layers. Start with a bold color or texture at the back, and place a contrast color or fun pattern in front.

3. Freestyle Mix
Perfect for holiday or cottage-style bedrooms. Mix colors, patterns, and sizes. Let your cushions “fall into place” naturally, there are no rules here!
Step 3: Add a Throw Blanket or Bed Runner
These two pieces are the magic touch of bed styling. They add that final layer of color, texture, and comfort.
Bed runners are long, narrow strips of fabric placed across the foot of the bed. Hotels use them to protect bedding from bags and shoes. But at home, they’re a design feature. Choose a 65cm width for a lighter look or go bold with a 145cm double-width runner.
Throw blankets are soft, relaxed, and perfect for layering. They come in all kinds of cozy knitted textures and eye-catching patterns, often finished with fun details like tassels or fringe. You can fold one neatly across the foot of the bed, drape it casually off to the side, or toss it over the top for that laid-back, effortless look that feels both stylish and lived-in.
Step 4: Play with Color, Pattern & Texture
When styling your bed with cushions, this is where your bed really comes alive. Here are 6 tips to get you started:

1. Choose 1–3 Colors
Pick one main color and one or two accents. If your bedspread is white or beige, you can add pops of soft blue, warm terracotta, or leafy green. Don’t overload it—beds are smaller than sofas, so too many colors can feel busy.

2. Play with Shapes and Sizes
Don’t be afraid to mix things up! Start with two large square cushions (45x45 or 50x50 cm) at the back to anchor the look. Then layer in smaller cushions, like rectangles or round shapes, to add variety and depth. Want something that really stands out? Try adding a bolster cushion in the center—it’s a simple swap that instantly makes your bed look styled and intentional.

3. Add Texture
Texture is what makes your bed look and feel amazing. Mix soft cottons, cozy knits, breezy linen, plush velvet, or a touch of faux fur. Want a bit of sparkle? Try sequins or metallic threads for that glam, eye-catching finish.

4. Combine Patterns
Start with plain or small-patterned cushions at the back, and save the boldest prints for the front. This makes your layout look balanced. Want to go wild? Keep the cushions simple and use a dramatic throw to make a statement.

5. Think About the “Underline”
A bed runner or throw acts like the underline to your bed styling—it anchors the whole look. For a clean, polished vibe, fold it neatly across the foot of the bed. Want something softer and more relaxed? Drape it on the diagonal, let it hang over one side, or even give it a casual “swoosh” for that lived-in, boutique hotel feel. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference.

6. Don’t Be Afraid to Try New Things
Texture is what makes your bed look and feel amazing. Mix soft cottons, cozy knits, breezy linen, plush velvet, or a touch of faux fur. Want a bit of sparkle? Try sequins or metallic threads for that glam, eye-catching finish.
Styling your bed with cushions and throws is one of the easiest (and most fun!) ways to refresh your room. It doesn’t need to be expensive or complicated—you just need a few pieces that reflect your personality and make you smile.
