Outdoor Cushion Cover Care – Solution-Dyed Olefin and Acrylic
Solution-dyed Olefin is known for being fade-resistant, durable, and easy to maintain — making it a top choice for outdoor use. Here’s how to take care of your outdoor cushion covers:
- Brush off dirt and dust regularly before it settles.
- Rinse with clean water occasionally to remove surface debris.
- Mix mild soap with lukewarm water.
- Use a soft cloth or brush to gently clean the area.
- Rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry completely.
- Mix 1/4 cup mild soap with 1 gallon of lukewarm water.
- Apply with a sponge or brush and scrub gently.
- Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap.
- Air dry in a shaded area to avoid direct sun exposure while drying.
Olefin resists mildew, but if dirt builds up, mildew may appear. Before we start, make sure to always test on a small, inconspicuous area first.
- Mix 1 cup bleach, 1/4 cup mild soap, and 1 gallon water.
- Spot clean using a soft brush.
- Rinse thoroughly and let it air dry completely.
During heavy rain or off-season months, store cushions indoors or use breathable, waterproof covers to extend their life.
General Care for All Cushion Cores
No matter the type of foam, a few simple habits will keep your cushions comfy and in top shape:
- Fluff cushions regularly to maintain loft and comfort.
- Rotate and flip weekly for even wear.
- Always use with a protective, removable cover.
- Keep inserts dry and never store when damp.
Standard Polyurethane Fiber (Indoor Fiber core filling)
Standard indoor fiber core fillings or feather and down fillings are not recommended for outdoor use. They can get damp, humid, and hot, which causes the fibers to clump together and flatten over time. Plus, they might be more susceptible to mildew and odors. Instead, consider using quick-dry foam core filling. It’s much easier to maintain and stands up to all kinds of weather.
Quick-Dry Foam Cushion Core Care
Your quick-dry foam outdoor cushion core is designed for ventilation and moisture resistance, but proper cleaning helps it perform at its best.
Cleaning Stains On Quick Dry Cushion Cores

- Don’t machine wash foam cores unless labeled as safe.
- Don’t store cushions in sealed plastic bags or in damp spaces.
- Don’t bleach or scrub aggressively unless dealing with mildew (and only when needed).
